With the new Twilight movie, Eclipse, coming out I feel it is my duty to address this specific blight on society. A few weeks ago my co-worker, walked in and asked if I had ever seen any of the Twilight movies. She then said, “That little white girl has no business messin with a vampire and a werewolf.” This statement is exactly true! This concept of love that is promoted in these movies adds to the corrupt ideation that young girls these days have about love. While, it is not only a trait found in young girl, I am less concerned about adult women because really they’re already messed up if they think Twilight is how their life should be like. So young girls get this false vision of what love is or what is acceptable love.
I’m sorry, but a brooding distant man is not someone you should be content to spend your life with. I realize that this is probably more like the reality, but we should be encouraging positive change rather than glorifying the destructive truth. So a much older man dating a very naïve teenage girl doesn’t seem to bother anyone else? I mean the guy might look like a kid but he’s been around for a long while. I don’t think we need more young girls dating men as old as their fathers.
Also, Edward’s crazy obsession with Bella is just creepy. I’m sorry it’s not romantic it’s disturbing, guy is unstable and possessive. We do not need girls, and even some boys, thinking that this is what a healthy passionate stable relationship should look like. Also he keeps her at arms distance and is completely moody. Girl, get yourself a new man who really does love you and doesn’t want to eat you. Edward finds Bella interesting because he can’t read her mind so he loves the mystery. Dude welcome to being a guy! Men never know what girls are thinking; it’s not mysterious, it’s annoying and a pain in the ass.
This girl does not have any self-respect because she is already to give it up to her vampire boyfriend and make little bat babies, which she does later but still. Again, I realize this is reality and I am far from being a prude but we don’t need to promote girls giving it up early, they do that on their own without glorifying it further.
Besides being a horrible model for relationships, Twilight has also lead to the de-fanging of vampires. Vampires now are no longer scary or creepy they are sexy and hot. What the hell? I’m sorry an undead thing sucking my blood through my jugular is not hot. Also, crystal vampires are just plain gay! There are more and more shows popping up about vampires living among us. I’m tired of it! Also, sick and tired of them being able to walk around in the sun. Really, the idea was that they were creatures of the dark meant to be evil so the warmth of the sun and light killed them. You take that way and look what happens.
I realize that even Bram Stoker’s Dracula was brooding love obsessed crazy but at least he wasn’t afraid of killing people and tormenting Jonathan. All in all, Dracula was much cooler than Edward and Vlad the Impaler was a crazy awesome real person. I just want vampires to have more fang and evil then they have been depicted lately. So, Twilight has ruined not only vampires but also many young girls’ vision of what a romantic healthy relationship should look like. Plus, Stephanie Myers can’t write worth a damn.

check out The Oatmeal's take on Twilight. I was in tears on the floor.
ReplyDeleteThe most unforgivable thing is the glittering. At that point it goes completely from a sort of obsession with the macabre and the danger inherent in a strong male, and fully into a female wet dream. Mostly, though, for having lived so long, he's having a love affair with the embodiment of banality. If only he could read her mind, he'd see how dreadfully boring she is; not that he's particularly interesting himself. I guess they are made for each other.
ReplyDeleteI miss Mando!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I despise Twilight, but I am constantly amused by people making fun of it. I can't get enough of it. So, I suppose on some level I'm a fan? But not quite?
I'm blaming the prevalence of it and the constant Twilight and Twilight-related shit I got to deal with at Hastings.
